Local basketball player makes ESPN list after matching Michael Jordan's record

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A local basketball player made a player of the week list on ESPN after matching a record set by Michael Jordan.

Laney guard Elijah Wilson was chosen as the southeast region’s player of the week for ESPNHS. The 6-foot-2 senior scored 42 points in a four-overtime 68-62 win against New Bern last Monday, which tied the 1980 single-game record set by the NBA legend.

"You know Michael, he'd be the first to tell Elijah he needed four overtimes to do it," Laney athletics director Fred Lynch told WECT.com after the game. "Michael did it in regulation."

Wilson, who committed to attending the College of Charleston, joins New London’s Kris Dunn, Eastern Hancock’s Victor Vincz, Ladue’s Cornell Johnston, and Green Valley’s Durrell McDonald on the player of the week list.

Blizzard Athletics hosting men's spring basketball league

Blizzard Athletics hosting men's spring basketball league

WILMINGTON (WECT) - Brett Blizzard is credited with building two gymnasiums. As the UNC Wilmington men's basketball all-time leading scorer, Blizzard swished more shots than any other Seahawk in Trask Coliseum. He built Trask, metaphorically speaking.

As the creator of Blizzard Athletics, Blizzard physically built another gym. The current Italian professional took a warehouse and installed a NCAA-length gym floor, basketball goals and various training equipment. He built the Blizzard Athletics facility, literally.

Next month, 18-year-old men and older have a chance to swish shots of their own on Blizzard's court in the annual spring basketball league. Competition ranges from professionals to recreational players.
