Learn to play tennis in a wheelchair

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover Regional Medical Center Rehabilitation Services and the Greater Wilmington Tennis Association are teaming up to sponsor a 10-week wheelchair tennis clinic this summer.

All experience levels are welcome to take part in the free clinic and there is no limit on how many players can participate.

The clinic will begin with basic instruction from local tennis pro Rosanne Boswell in wheelchair tennis to prepare participants for tournament play. Tennis rackets will be provided for those who do not have their own and at least three sport chairs will be available for the players.

The clinic begins July 10 and will run through September 18 (no clinic August 28). The sessions will be held from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on Tuesdays at Ogden Park in Wilmington.

Police chief goes ice skating with campers

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officers with the Wilmington Police Department are hosting a week’s worth of events for rising 4th and 5th grade boys in the community.

Children participating in the five-day camp will get to enjoy recreational activities, field trips, educational experiences and will complete a community service project.

Wednesday morning, the campers took part in a bike rodeo at WPD headquarters. The Safe Kids organization donated helmets to children who did not have one. Later in the day, Police Chief Ralph Evangelous is expected to join them at the Ice House in Ogden.

Campers will take up kayaking and swimming at Wrightsville Beach Thursday and participate in a field day at Maides Park Friday.

The Wilmington Police Department has been running the Cop Camp sessions since 1995. The camp for girls will take place in July.

Groundbreaking for privately-funded baseball field to be held at Olsen Park

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday for the construction of a baseball field and playground, according to a spokesperson for the City of Wilmington.

The event will be held at Olsen Park, located at 5510 Olsen Park Lane at 2:30 p.m.

Miracle Field, funded by private donations, donations from local contractors and a grant from the city and county parks bond, is specially-designed with a rubber surface, inlaid bases and more that makes it easier for disabled users to use the field. It is intended to be used by groups such as the Special Olympics and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Additionally, the local Kiwanis Club donated $75,000 for the nearby playground.

Funding for 90 percent of the $1.2 million goal for the field has been reached.

Local student to work on basketball skills with UNC coach Roy Williams

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A local middle school student is going to attend a basketball camp hosted by UNC coach Roy Williams.

John Durner, a rising seventh-grade student at Noble Middle School, won a Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship, according to a news release from Touchstone Energy.

“We are so pleased to provide John this opportunity to learn from an acclaimed NCAA coach and experience the thrill of playing on a college basketball court,” stated Lindsey Listrom, coordinator of the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship program, in a news release. “It is clear that he is an outstanding student, athlete and community member, and we’re proud to have him represent us at the Roy Williams camp.”

John will stay on campus in a dorm during the five-day camp and will work directly with Williams on fundamental skills.

$250K to be used to buy land for Castle Hayne Park

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than $250,000 of a $1.56 million grant from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund will be distributed to New Hanover County, according to a news release from Governor Bev Perdue.

The County will use $287,817 to buy land for Castle Hayne Park.

Grants were also awarded to the City of Wilmington for the Cross City Trail ($219,308) and Brunswick County for Town Creek Park work ($359,354).

“Creating new jobs has been one of my top priorities,” Perdue stated via the news release. “These grants put people back to work building new parks and new facilities. They also enhance our state’s quality of life by creating recreational opportunities and protecting significant open spaces. CEOs consistently rank North Carolina one of the nation’s best places for doing business because of our state’s excellent quality of life.”

Since 1995, the Parks and Recreation Authority has reportedly awarded 696 grants worth $156 million.

City hopes new golf course will help expand program

City hopes new golf course will help expand program

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The City of Wilmington hopes to expand its golf program by adding a 9-hole, par-3 golf course at Inland Greens.

The plans include improvements to the drainage system in the area to ease flooding that occurs during heavy rains.

The city will hold a public informational meeting Thursday at Blair Elementary School on Market Street to talk about the Inland Greens Park and golf course.

Representatives from the city and firms contracted for park design will be on hand to answer questions. The meeting starts at 6:00 p.m.
