Friday night football schedule

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) - WECT will be covering several area high school football games Friday night.

The following high school teams will play against each other:

  • West Brunswick at Laney
  • South Columbus at Hoggard
  • Topsail at Ashley
  • Purnell Swett at New Hanover
  • Lejeune at North Brunswick
  • Whiteville at East Columbus
  • Cannon School at Harrells Christian
  • East Bladen at Clinton

Laney dominates the field over South Brunswick

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A pair of teams that faced off in the BB&T Jamboree went at it for real Friday night in Southport. Laney traveled to South Brunswick trying for a second-straight “W.”

Laney’s offense dominated the field, gaining a total of 225 yards and five touchdowns.

The Bucs defeated the cougars 41-7.

In week four, South Brunswick will play Southern Durham on the road while Laney hosts West Brunswick.

Athletic booster club meeting to be held at Laney High School

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – An athletic booster club meeting will be held at Laney High School on Monday, Sept. 3, according to the school’s website.

The meeting will go from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone supportive of Laney athletics is invited to attend.

Mixed-doubles tennis event scheduled to be held

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Tennis players, grab your rackets! The Porters Neck Tennis Association will be hosting the 2012 Davis Cup Saturday, Sept. 22, according to a post from Porter’s Neck Country Club.

The mixed-doubles tennis event will offer a continental breakfast and sandwich lunch.

The cost for PNTA members is $10, and the cost for non-members is $10.
