Kids can give hockey a shot for free at upcoming event

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Have you ever thought about signing your kids up for hockey?

If so, now is the perfect time to let them try out the sport before committing to a team.

The Wilmington Ice House, along with the Coastal Carolina Hockey Association, is allowing children ages 4-10 to give hockey a shot – for free -- Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., according to a flyer.

WILMINGTON - Cape Fear Community College is giving away free tickets to its annual men's basketball game in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

The game is on Monday, Jan. 21 at 3:30 p.m. immediately following the MLK celebration parade in downtown Wilmington. The Sea Devils will take on Mount Zion Christian Academy.

Laney Bucs fall short on the road

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – In the 4AA bracket of high school football, the Laney Buccaneers have lost 8-striaght playoff games dating back to 2001 and Friday night was no different.

The Bucs hit the road to face Middle Creek who was 10-1, and had won 7 straight going into the matchup.

Middle Creek kept their winning streak alive Friday and beat Laney by 10 with a final score of 31-21.

With the loss the Bucs end the season with a 5-6 record.

Kids can try playing hockey for free

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Icehawks are hosting an event Saturday to give children in the area the opportunity to try playing ice hockey for free.

The clinic will be held Saturday at the Icehouse from 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Boys and girls ages 4-10 will get to learn the basics of hockey in a fun, safe environment.

This event is designed to provide youth hockey associations a national platform to introduce new kids to the sport.

Try out different kayaks, go on bird hike at Smith Creek Park event

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Smith Creek Park is the place to be for New Hanover County residents who want to experience nature or check out some fun water sports Saturday.

According to a news release from a county spokesperson, the public will have the chance to try out different kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, and demonstrations will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hook, Line and Paddle is hosting the event, and all skill levels are welcome.

Children under 16 need to be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Ice skate in your favorite Halloween costume for a great cause

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Join the Hotwheels Power Wheelchair Hockey Team at The Wilmington Ice House Saturday, October 27 from 7:30 p.m. until 10 p.m. for a special ice skating fundraiser.

All of the team's players suffer from muscular dystrophy, and money raised will benefit the team.

Make sure to wear your a Halloween costume if you go -- there will be prizes for the top three best ones.
