NCSU's Bryan named to Mackey list

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State tight end George Bryan has been named to the 2011 Mackey Award Watch List as announced today by the Nassau County Sports Commission. The award is given annually to the nation's top tight end.

Bryan, a two-time All-ACC performer, was a semifinalist for the award last season. The former New Hanover standout is only the third tight end in NCSU history to earn first-team all-conference honors, and is the only one to do so twice.

Last year the Castle Hayne native caught 35 passes for 369 yards and three scores. He will enter the season with 13 career touchdown catches, tied for ninth in school history and the most among returning players.

WILMINGTON, NC – Saturday, July 2, the Wilmington Hammerheads play host to their West Coast rival the Los Angeles Blues at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Stadium.

In honor and celebration of the July 4th weekend, the Hammerheads will be hosting a patriotic fireworks show immediately following the conclusion on the match, weather permitting.

The July 2nd game is also Military Appreciation Night at Legion Stadium. All military personnel will receive ½ off a single ticket with a valid military ID. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $6 for adults.

It's time to register for indoor soccer

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Now is the time to sign up for indoor soccer in Wilmington.

Children ages 5-15 are invited to register for indoor soccer games and practice at the MLK Community Center, located at 401 S. 8th St.

Practices will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday from 5:45-7:30 p.m. beginning on July 11. Games are scheduled to start on July 27, according to the Wilmington Recreation Dept.

The cost to play is $10 per person.

The show down will take place at Buck Hardee Field in Legion Stadium. Who do you think will win?

Wave Transit offers free transportation, free Sharks admission Saturday

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — In an effort to demonstrate the importance of public transportation, the Cape Fear Public Transportation Authority will sponsor the fifth annual Alternative Transportation Day on Saturday, June 18.

According to a news release from the CFPTA, all citizens are encouraged to ride public transportation for free. In addition to waiving fares for the day, Wave Transit has reportedly teamed up with the Wilmington Sharks baseball club and Independence Mall to assist in sponsoring alternative transportation night.

Fans are encouraged to park their vehicles at Independence Mall starting at 5:30 p.m. in the lot next to the Wachovia Bank building. The Wave Transit buses will take fans to and from the game until approximately 10 p.m. or the conclusion of the game. In addition, fans who choose to take the Wave Transit buses to the game will receive free admission.

For the Wilmington Hammerheads the next team on the schedule is Orlando City. Wednesday afternoon the boys learned the soccer club isn't the only team from Florida they'll have to prepare for this season.

The Hammerheads will host the Central Florida Kraze in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

The game is scheduled for June 14th at Legion Stadium.

The Kraze is a developmental team that is currently 4-0-1 in the PDL's Southeast Division standings.

NHCS students offered free athletic screening exams

NHCS students offered free athletic screening exams

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) — New Hanover County Schools' athletes and cheerleaders can get free athletic screening examinations by physicians in the New Hanover-Pender County Medical Society, in conjunction with the New Hanover County Health Department.

All students who plan to participate in athletics or cheerleading during the 2011-12 school year must undergo a state-mandated screening examination. Boys' exams will be held on Thursday, June 9.

Students should report to the NHC Health Department, located at 2020 S. 17th Street, at the following times:

  • 6 p.m. for Hoggard, Roland-Grise, Myrtle Grove, New Hanover, Virgo, Holly Shelter and Williston schools
  • 6:45 p.m. for Murray, Ashley, Trask, Laney, Noble and all private schools

Rising ninth graders should list the high school that they will attend in the fall. Prior to the exam, students must have their medical history, emergency information and parental permission forms completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Students may also receive a free Tdap vaccination during their exam if requested by a parent or guardian.
