WPD, WFD to square off in charity ice hockey game

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Police Department and the Wilmington Fire Department will compete in a charity ice hockey game at The Icehouse Saturday, Feb. 23 at 6:45 p.m., according to a news release.

This year, proceeds will benefit construction of the WFD Memorial at the Empie Park Fire Station. Next year, proceeds will go to a police department charity.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Some of our local heroes will hit the ice for an annual charity game.

The Wilmington Police Department and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will take on the Wilmington Fire Department and EMS on Feb. 23.

Officers and deputies will face off against firefighters and emergency officials in an ice hockey game at the Wilmington Ice House.

Final deadline to apply for 'Biggest Loser' competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Today is the deadline to apply for a spot in a local “Biggest Loser” competition.

Anita Harrell, owner of Fitness Motivation, has invited those who are obese to come to her studio to apply for a spot in the challenge.

"This challenge isn't for someone who wants to lose 20 pounds," said Harrell. "It's for people who have gone off the tracks with their fitness. It's for people who need large-scale weight loss in their life."

Six applicants will be selected to win 12 free weeks of personal training. Those selected will be working out with Anita five to seven days a week.

Applications must be turned in by February 11. The program will start at the end of February.

CFCC women's basketball team to "Play for Pink" tonight for breast cancer awareness

WILMINGTON - Tonight at the Schwartz Center, the Cape Fear Community College women's basketball team will be trading in their regular blue and white uniforms for pink.

The lady Sea Devils will take on Brunswick Community College for the annual "Play for Pink" game to support breast cancer awareness.

Representatives of the Pretty in Pink Foundation will be at the game, which starts at 6 p.m. General admission is $3.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Mark your calendars! Kids 4-10 are invited to try hockey for free in just a few weeks.

According to the Wilmington Ice House’s website, Hockey Weekend Across America will take place in Wilmington Saturday, Feb. 16, 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 pm.

The first 15 players to reserve a spot will be provided with full hockey equipment for free.

Participants are asked to bring a helmet and snow gloves.
