NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Residents in a neighborhood in Castle Hayne are trapped between a sinkhole and a dirt road under water.

The road at the intersection of Linville Drive and Mossy Rock Court started caving in two weeks ago and has become a big mess.

The sinkhole is on the only good road in and out of the community for people living on this side of the neighborhood. There's a dirt road, but the recent rain put it under water. Now, residents who live behind the sinkhole will start parking their cars on the other side of the road and walk home.

Not only is it an inconvenience, but having the road blocked off is a public safety issue. Since it's a private road, neither the state nor the county maintain it, which is causing problems because no one is claiming responsibility.

The developer should be the one to fix the problem, but in this case the developer has filed for bankruptcy.

County engineers said everyone needs to make sure they double check their leases and understand who owns the property around them. They plan to fix the sinkhole and hope to get it done as soon as they can.
