NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Local individuals and couples are needed to serve as foster parents, and if you're interested in learning more, an orientation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Access Family Services in Wilmington.

Pender Co. Animal Shelter to host pet food drive soon

PENDER COUNTY and NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – On Saturday, March 9, the Pender County Animal Shelter will be hosting a food drive at Pets Plus in Wilmington, according to the shelter's Facebook page.

Visitors are asked to donate items for the Easter Bunny, who will be at the event, to give to his furry friends at the shelter.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It may still be winter, but if you're a golfer, you already have a good reason to look forward to spring -- the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra is hosting the 16th Annual Golf Tournament at Eagle Point Golf Club on Tuesday, May 21.

According to a news release, all proceeds will support Wilmington’s local orchestra and youth education programs such as Wilmington’s youth Orchestra.

This is a great opportunity to get together with friends and become a team to benefit a great cause. The event starts at 7:30 a.m. and breakfast will be provided for all who attend.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - There's a Zumbathon planned to help raise money for local military families.

Stacey Moulder is a Zumba instructor at Gold's Gym off Racine, and now she wants to help raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project.  Moulder said her husband has been in the military for at least ten years, so she understands what families go through and how important The Wounded Warrior Project is for them.

Moulder hopes she can raise $1,000.

Pender Co. Animal Shelter releases donation wish list; will host pet drive

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Pender County Animal Shelter recently released a wish list of items needed via its Facebook page, and workers are hosting a pet food drive to be held in Wilmington soon.

Items needed include the following:

  • 30-gallon totes (to keep donated food in)
  • Puppy and dog food (wet and dry)

Local non-profits help ring in the New Year with a day of service

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - LINC(Leading Into New Communities), FoodCorps, Feast Down East, VISTA, and Corporation for Public and Community Service have come together to host a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event for Monday, Jan. 21 . This event will take place at LINC farm located at 222 Division Drive near the airport from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 According to the press release, the day will be spent clearing and preparing this future urban farm for spring planting. Community volunteers, students, and corps members will pitch in for this event.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer.  After volunteers finish their farm duties, a celebration meal will be prepared by senior corps volunteers from the Wilmington area.

OrthoWilmington surgeons offer pro-bono joint replacements

OrthoWilmington surgeons offer pro-bono joint replacements

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – OrthoWilmington is taking part in Operation Walk, USA, a humanitarian organization that provides free hip and knee replacements for patients who cannot afford the surgery.

The four physicians of OrthoWilmington who specialize in joint replacement will join the efforts to perform these pro-bono surgeries.

The official end date for Operation Walk, USA was in December, but OrthoWilmington will continue to do the surgeries for previously selected patients over the next few months.

According to their website, Operation Walk USA assists US citizens and permanent residents who do not qualify for government assistance programs by harnessing a national network of volunteer hospitals, physicians, nurses and physical therapists who are passionate about their work and willing to assist with this effort.
