NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - New Hanover County commissioners vote on a way to fund resource officers in elementary schools.

Commissioners voted unanimously to fund "Option 2A."

It splits up the cost of keeping resource officers and deputies at all 24 of the county's elementary schools through the end of the school year.

The county will pay about $354,000 of the $635,000 total cost. The schools will pay the rest.

The Wilmington Police Department agreed to hang over four of its officers for school security, but Wilmington City Council has to approve Police Chief Ralph Evangelous' offer.

If it's approved Tuesday night, the agreement would last until the end of this year.
