Student faces charges after being found with cocaine, liquor at school

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 16-year-old Ashley High School student faces drug charges after she was found to be in possession of cocaine.

Authorities with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office say they arrested Mikayla Ann Wright Tuesday.

Wright was found on campus with three other students; however, she was not in class. Wright and the students were then taken to school administrators, where they found a small vile of white powder and a mini bottle of liquor in her purse.

From there, Wright was arrested and taken to the New Hanover County Detention Facility, where she was given a $10,000 bond.

She faces the following charges:

  • Possession of cocaine (felony) - 1 count
  • Possession of alcohol on school campus (misdemeanor) - 1 count
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia (misdemeanor) - 1 count
