Laney basketball to dedicate court to longtime coaches

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The court inside of Michael Jordan Gymnasium will officially be dedicated as Fred Lynch-Ruby Sutton court in honor of the two longtime coaches at Laney.

The ceremony will take place after the varsity girls game against Pender on December 7.

"We thought the Pender game was a good one because it's a nice rivalry and the stands are typically packed." Laney head coach Nathan Faulk said.  "Plus Gary [Battle] and Fred have a long-standing friendship."

A logo reading "Fred Lynch-Ruby Sutton Court" is already on the floor.

"They joke about Fred's name being first all the time." Faulk said.  "It was strictly alphabetical."

Lynch stepped down in the offseason after 27 seasons as the head coach of the boys basketball team.  Sutton just finished her 31st year with the Lady Bucs volleyball team.

Former players are expected to return for the ceremony in honor of their coaches.
