WEATHER: More showers

More showers are on tap throughout the day today as a meandering, slow moving cold front moves toward the Carolina coast.

Our daytime high temperatures will move into the mid 80s under mostly cloudy skies.  With tons of moisture in place, wherever showers pop up we will likely see some locally heavy downpours.

While severe weather isn't necessarily going to be an issue, some flash flood warnings have indeed popped up to our south and west this morning, so keep an eye to the First Alert radar if you have outdoor plans at any time today.

Wednesday conditions will clear some progressively throughout the afternoon as the front pushes southeast and high pressure begins to build in from the north.

High temperatures will run a few degrees cooler into the low to mid 80s.  The drier air will move into the region making conditions a bit nicer for the end of the week with humidity noticeably lessened.

Berger issues appeal, asks to be reinstated on board of commissioners

Former New Hanover Commissioner Brian Berger has issued an appeal to new Hanover County Superior Court against his removal from office last month.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Former New Hanover Commissioner Brian Berger has issued an appeal to new Hanover County Superior Court against his removal from office last month.

Elected leaders voted 3-2 in May in favor of removing Berger from the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners during an amotion process, the first hearing in the state in more than 100 years.

Board members cited Berger's weak attendance record, his criminal history and mental health as reasons for their decision.

In Berger's appeal, he asks for a temporary restraining order to prevent commissioners from filling the vacant seat on the board and asks to be reinstated in that position.

Berger also asks the court declare the Board of Commissioners did not have the authority to have an amotion process and also requests a permanent injunction to prevent the use of the process in the future.

The appeal was issued June 13, within the 30 day limit.

What's next for WAVE Transit's budget

The size of WAVE Transit could be shrinking in New Hanover County.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The size of WAVE Transit could be shrinking in New Hanover County.

County commissioners briefly discussed the bus service at their budget work session Thursday afternoon.

The county's recommended budget currently lists WAVE's contribution as more than a $100,000 less than what was requested. WAVE's Executive Director Albert Eby said the full $250,000 is needed to maintain current operations.

Fleet maintenance and liability insurance are two of the reasons for this year's larger request, according to Eby. Without the money, he said routes – like the new one that reaches all the way to Pleasure Island – could be cut.

Commissioners have not made a decision on the money, but Eby said he's confident with what he's heard up to this point.

WEATHER: Intense heat and storms

High temperatures are expected again this afternoon ahead of a potent cold front.  Mid 90s are expected with triple digit heat index values possible.

Current timing has the system moving in to the region late Thursday (after dark) into the overnight hours on Friday.

The Storm Prediction Center has us under the slight chance for severe weather, but by the time this line gets to the heavily populated areas in eastern North Carolina.

Strong straight line winds appear to be the biggest threat, but we will have to monitor the possibility of hail and isolated tornados as well.  So as this system progresses southeasterly through our region, the storms may lose some of their potency.

Drier and somewhat cooler air is expected from Friday through Sunday with highs in the mid to upper 80s.  Another cold front approaches Tuesday
