Dental clinic for kids at St. Mary's

Dental clinic for kids at St. Mary's

Some local children will smile a lot brighter after this weekend.

A pediatric dental clinic is being held in Wilmington on Saturday, June 9, at St. Mary Dental Clinic.

The dental program was created through donations from the Ministering Circle. Last year the organization donated $20,000, and an additional $10,000 this year.

Along with dental care, the children will learn how to prevent cavities and other tooth issues from health care professionals.

The clinic is on Saturday from 9am to 2pm. St. Mary Dental Clinic is located at 412 Ann St.

DMV awarded for helping save lives

WILMINGTON,NC (WECT)- Getting or renewing your driver's license is important in more ways than one. It enables you to get to work, school or anywhere else you want to go. It can also help save lives if you answer this question with a "yes". “Do you want to be an organ donor?”

Donate Life NC recently awarded a Wilmingtion DMV office for doing a good job getting people to say "yes" to that question.

Here are more details from the news release:

Donate Life North Carolina awarded two plaques to the Wilmington (North) Driver License Office of the NC Division of Motor Vehicles (NC DMV) for achieving both the highest and most improved donor designation rates in its district for 2011. The Wilmington (North) office signed up 67.6 percent of its customers as organ and eye donors in 2011, which is well above the average state sign-up rate at 52.8 percent.

Students build single-family home from scratch

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Students from Cape Fear Community College have spent a year building a three-bedroom house from scratch.

The 1,008 square-foot home is currently located at the college’s North Campus. It has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, laundry room and a 144 square-foot front porch.

According to a press release from the college, the exterior is made of solid cedar planking and has been built to comply with 130 mph wind-zone standards.

Lead carpentry instructor David Cameron said this type of project is “literally the foundation of the program, which gives students the fundamentals of residential construction.”

The home will be auctioned off in the next few weeks, and the proceeds from the auction will go back into the program for next year to help cover costs of the next project.
