Habitat for Humanity to open new ReStore

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity will soon open a new ReStore building in the Ogden area.

The ReStore will sell donated, household materials at below market price in an effort to keep these items out of landfills and help protect the environment.

Right now, there is a ReStore located at 1208 South Third Street. Profits from the stores are used to build Habitat for Humanity Homes.

The organization is currently looking for donations to stock the new store and volunteers to help work.

Anyone with donations should call 910.762.4793 and anyone interested in volunteering should contact Kitty Yerkes at 910.762.4744 or kitty@capefearhabitat.org.

A grand opening of the new store located at 7330 Market Street  is scheduled for August 11.

Open houses scheduled at area schools

Open houses scheduled at area schools

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools released its open house schedule for the 2012-2013 school year recently.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend an open house event to learn more about the school before the first day of classes. The first day of school for traditional calendar students is Monday, Aug. 27, according to a news release.

The open house schedule, provided by NHCS, is provided below:

Year-Round Elementary Schools
Codington and Eaton will hold “Meet Your Teacher” on Monday, July 23 from 4 until 6 p.m. Codington and Eaton students will begin the new school year on Tuesday, July 24.

Traditional Elementary Schools
All traditional elementary school open houses will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 during each school’s designated time.
Hours: 5 until 7 p.m.

D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy will hold a family orientation on Thursday, Aug. 16 from 5 until 8 p.m. and an Open House on Wednesday, Aug. 22 from 5 until 7 p.m.

Program helps cancer survivors get back on their feet

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – New Hanover Regional Medical Center’s Zimmer Cancer Center will offer a program to help cancer survivors transition from active treatment to post-treatment care.

The Cancer Transitions program was created to bridge the gap between cancer treatment and life following cancer. According to the hospital, spaces are still available for this free five week program designed for cancer survivors and their caregivers.

The sessions will be held Tuesday evenings from 6:00-8:00 starting July 17. They will be held in the conference room at NHRMC’s Zimmer Cancer Center.

Lt. Col. Guy Wetzel, of Wilmington, is in Afghanistan for the holidays but wanted to wish everyone in  his hometown a happy 4th of July.

He also gives a special birthday wish to his uncle.

Bring Seymore into your home

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Are you looking to add a pet to your family? Consider adopting Seymore from the New Hanover County Humane Society.

Seymore is a 6-year-old Papillon that loves to run and play. He gets along well with other animals and small children and is searching for a permanent home.

Public library gets money to digitize

Public library gets money to digitize

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The New Hanover County Public Library in Wilmington is one of 71 library projects around North Carolina to receive a grant for books, outreach, and technology.

The State Library Division of the Department of Cultural Resources awarded $1.4 million in federally funded grants on Thursday, according to a news release.

The New Hanover Public Library was awarded $32,000 for a digitization project. This money will go towards preserving 3,000 images of residents from the Lower Cape Fear region throughout history. These images will be digitized and placed in the library's photo collection. Community members are encouraged to bring in images to submit.

Other projects around the state include grants to purchase new print resources (H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson), upgrade computer systems (Petttigrew Regional Library, which serves Chowan, Perquimans, Tyrell, and Washington), install wireless internet (Bennett College in Greensboro), and add eBooks (Fontana Regional Library, which serves Swain, Macon, and Jackson counties).

GRADUATION: Bucs to walk across the stage Saturday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Seniors at Laney High School will receive their diplomas on Saturday, June 9.

The New Hanover County Board of Education will attend the graduation ceremony, which will be held at 4 p.m. at Trask Coliseum, on the campus of UNCW.
