Children’s author hosting book signing at Fuzzy Peach

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Children’s book author Jennifer Morrow will hold a book signing at the Fuzzy Peach in Porter’s Neck on Saturday from 1 p.m to 3 p.m., according to the Fuzzy Peach’s Facebook page.

Morrow will be promoting her latest book, Baby Doll Jenny.

Families and children are welcome to attend.

9/11 memorial service: 'Remembering and Rebuilding'

9/11 memorial service: 'Remembering and Rebuilding'

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Anchor Baptist Church in Wilmington will hold a special service Sunday in honor of the September 11 anniversary.

The church will present a memorial service called “Remembering and Rebuilding.” New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon will be the featured speaker at the event.

First responders and branches of the military will be recognized during the service Sunday. Additionally, the John Carroll Memorial Citizenship Award will be presented to a deserving member of our community.

Two services will be held on September 9 – 9:30 a.m. and again at 10:30 a.m. All attendees are invited to join in a covered dish lunch following the 10:30 service.

Register for 'A Day of Hope 2012'

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Scotts Hill Baptist Church’s military ministry will host its third annual Military Families Conference Saturday.

The event, “A Day of Hope 2012” will take place at the church’s Cross Point Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

According to a press release, the two-part conference is designed to provide a day of hope, encouragement, support and fun for all military wives, fiancés, girlfriends, mothers and female service members.

Registration for the event is $10 and includes lunch, door prizes, music, games, discussions and more. Free childcare will be available for children up to sixth grade.

A men’s event will run the same day from 10-11:30 a.m. and features a guest speaker, breakfast, basketball, door prizes and more. Registration for the men’s event is free.

NHC residents can check out local sights for free on Sunday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Don’t have plans this weekend? If you’re a New Hanover County resident, you can take advantage of some local attractions as part of NHC Residents’ Day, which is held the first Sunday of each month.

As part of Residents’ Day, locals can visit Airlie Gardens, the Cape Fear Museum and the NHC Arboretum for free, according to the county’s website.

Porters Neck Country Club to host UNCW Sports Day

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Porters Neck Country Club will be hosting the third annual UNCW Sports Day Sunday, Sept. 16, according to the country club.

The event, which is an athletic fair, will be held in the club’s main ballroom and will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend.

Athletic Director Jimmy Bass will be present, along with men’s basketball Coach Buzz Peterson and women’s basketball coach Adell Harris, who are expected to speak. The coaches will be joined by returning basketball player Keith Rendleman and six other team members, along with head baseball coach Mark Scalf.

Fundraiser scheduled to help get medical care for shelter dogs

BURGAW, NC (WECT) - The Sunburst Foundation has helped find homes for animals for since 2003.

The group's latest venture is a push to get medical care for the unwanted animals that wind up at Pender County Animal Control.

Sunburst Foundation is working with a local vet, Audrey Mizrahi at Cape Fear Spay Neuter Clinic in Castle Hayne. Mizrahi has made a proposal for a medical care program for Pender County Animal Control in Burgaw.   

Sunburst Foundation is sponsoring a fundraising event to help raise start up funds for this program.  The funds will be used initially for vaccines and dewormer for the animals.   

An adoption event and fundraiser will be held at Unleashed at Landfall Shopping Center on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 11 a.m. - 3.pm.

The proposal will go to the County Commissioners in Burgaw in September.

Open house events planned this week for local schools

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County Schools released its open house schedule for the 2012-2013 school year.

Parents and students are encouraged to attend an open house event to learn more about the school before the first day of classes. The first day of school for traditional calendar students is Monday, Aug. 27, according to a news release.

The open house schedule, provided by NHCS, is provided below:

Traditional Elementary Schools
All traditional elementary school open houses will be held on Thursday, Aug. 23 during each school’s designated time.
Hours: 5 until 7 p.m.
