Orientation scheduled for anyone interested in becoming a foster parent

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Local individuals and couples are needed to serve as foster parents, and if you're interested in learning more, an orientation will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Access Family Services in Wilmington.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC(WECT) - Volunteers with the Murray Middle School PTA are organizing a dinner theater and silent auction on April 4, but they need help from the New Hanover County community -- specifically, local businesses.

The dinner thater and auction will be a unique event that includes a catered dinner, performance, a dessert social and silent auction.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – You may want to go hungry to Laney High School's open house tonight.

The 4th annual Chili Cook-off event will take place in the main hallway 6:30-7:30 p.m.

A panel of judges will award the “Best Chili” prize and the public will chose the “People’s Choice Award” and “First Runner Up.”

Don’t forget to name your chili because there will be a winner for the best name as well.

There is a $5 fee to taste chili but it also includes tasting cups and spoons for all entries and a bottled water.

Laney's fourth annual Chili Cook-off is Thursday

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Get your stomachs ready for the fourth annual Chili Cook-off event at Laney High School this Thursday.

According to the school’s website, the event will take place 6:30-7:30 p.m. during its Open House in the main hallway.

A panel of judges will award the “Best Chili” prize and the public will chose the “People’s Choice Award” and “First Runner Up.”

Don’t forget to name your chili because there will be a winner for the best name as well.

There is a $5 fee to taste chili but it also includes tasting cups and spoons for all entries and a bottled water.

Entry forms for cooking chili are available in the front office. Participants are responsible for cleaning their area at the end of the night.

Kids can give hockey a shot for free at upcoming event

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Have you ever thought about signing your kids up for hockey?

If so, now is the perfect time to let them try out the sport before committing to a team.

The Wilmington Ice House, along with the Coastal Carolina Hockey Association, is allowing children ages 4-10 to give hockey a shot – for free -- Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., according to a flyer.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - There's a Zumbathon planned to help raise money for local military families.

Stacey Moulder is a Zumba instructor at Gold's Gym off Racine, and now she wants to help raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project.  Moulder said her husband has been in the military for at least ten years, so she understands what families go through and how important The Wounded Warrior Project is for them.

Moulder hopes she can raise $1,000.
