NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Students and staff at Murrayville Elementary took a stand against bullying by celebrating Blue Shirt Day Wednesday.
The entire school gathered in the field in the shape of a heart wearing blue shirts to unite as one. An aerial photo was taken to capture the significance of the event.
Marrianna Alfonso, a fifth grade student, created the vision to help bring everyone together to stand up to bullies.
“Modeling positive behavior for our students makes these children want to be better people and by uniting as one, they will further empower themselves against bullying,” said Principal Dr. Duclos-Greenwood.
With full support from her principal and school counselor, Alfonso helped create the “Warrior Wednesdays” program, according to a press release. It’s a TV segment on the school’s morning broadcast aimed to remind students to stay strong and stand up to bullies in a positive way.
According to Demonlina, more and more students are coming forward to report bullying in the school.
