Time Warner Cable moving under one roof

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Time Warner Cable is bringing its employees together.

The company plans to build a new 45,000 square foot facility at 2321 Scientific Park Drive.  It will house all the Wilmington area offices under one roof.

Construction will begin in February, and workers are expected to start moving in during October.

The new building will also have some green features.  It will include improved water and electrical efficiency, use of day lighting and enhanced indoor air quality.

NHC residents can take their Christmas trees to 3 locations for recycling

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County residents can begin recycling used Christmas trees on Monday, Dec. 26.

The New Hanover County Environmental Management Department is offering three locations for residents living outside the city limits to take their trees. Here are the locations:

  • Ogden Park, near baseball fields
  • Myrtle Grove Middle School
  • New Hanover County Landfill, on U.S. Hwy. 421 North

The program will last through the month of January, with the last day being on Feb. 1.

Officials advise residents to remove all decorations and lights prior to dropping off their trees and stack the trees in a single row.

Recycling just got a little easier in some local parks

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County was recently awarded nearly $4,000 to purchase recycling containers for Hugh MacRae, Veteran’s and Ogden Park. Bins for aluminum cans and plastic bottles will be installed and maintained by the New Hanover County Parks Division.

The REPREVE® Recycling Grant Program, through its parent company Unifi, reportedly donated grant funding to four Keep America Beautiful affiliates in North Carolina to increase plastic bottle (PET) recycling. Other grant recipients are Keep Greenville Beautiful, Keep Nash-Edgecombe Counties Beautiful, and Keep Gastonia Beautiful.

This grant program, focusing on local community-based plastic bottle recycling programs, is the first by Unifi with Keep America Beautiful.

Officials celebrate opening of Smith Creek Park

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Despite suffering damages from Hurricane Irene, New Hanover County officials celebrated the opening of Smith Creek Park Wednesday morning.

There was an official ribbon cutting for the 92-acre park Wednesday morning at 10:00.  The park, located off Gordon and Harris Roads, includes a 35-acre freshwater lake.

New Hanover County received a half million dollar North Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant to be used for park development.

In addition to the grant, sand that was mined from the lake area was sold to defray costs.  The sand mine created one of the county’s largest freshwater lakes.

Progress Energy recognizes Board of Education for energy-efficiency investments

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Progress Energy has presented the New Hanover County Board of Education a rebate check of more than $175,000 for energy-efficiency improvements made to eight local schools. The incentives are reportedly provided through Progress Energy’s Energy Efficiency for Business program and will help to offset the cost of installing these energy saving measures.

The presentation was made on Nov. 1 at the board’s regular monthly meeting, according to a news release. The upgrades will result in nearly $100,000 in annual energy savings for the school system.

Energy efficiency upgrades, including improvements to lighting and heating and cooling (HVAC) systems, were made to these seven schools:

  • Laney High School
  • Hoggard High School
  • Virgo Middle School
  • Williston Middle School
  • Roland Grise Middle School
  • Trask Middle School
  • College Park Elementary School

City park finally moving forward

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – In 2004, the Wilmington City Council granted approval to enter into a lease agreement with the North Carolina Coastal Land Trust to develop and operate the land referred to as the Alderman Park Property. The problem is neither party signed the lease.

City Council is expected to approve and sign the lease at their meeting on Tuesday, October 4th.

The property contains protected plan species such as the Venus Fly Trap, Pitcher Plan, and wild orchids. They City has worked out a multi-phase plan for the land. Phase 1 includes a gravel surface parking area, a walkway, educational platform decking, and education signage highlighting the ecological features of the site.

Phase 2 of the park would include elevated walking trails through the remainder of the park. Phase 2 is currently included in the City’s plans for the fiscal year 2015-2016.

City of Wilmington completes debris pickup, NHC still working on unincorporated areas

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — The City of Wilmington has completed yard debris pick up left behind from Hurricane Irene. The City and contracted crews picked up 76,000 cubic yards, according to Malissa Talbert.

DRC Emergency Services, New Hanover County’s debris removal contractor, has collected 24,146 cubic yards as of Monday, Sept. 26 from roads in the unincorporated area, according to Mark Boyer with New Hanover County.

The second and final pass through the county began today in the southern unincorporated area. After it’s completed, the contractor will return to the northern area for the final collection.

Private roads will also be addressed during the second pass in addition to the state-system roads.
