Organizations work together to coordinate day of service event

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Several organizations have come together to coordinate a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event at the LINC Farm on Division Drive in Wilmington.

According to a press release, the day will be spent clearing and preparing future urban farm for spring planting, continuing the work Cape Fear Crop Mob began a earlier this year.

After a morning of work, a celebration will ensue with a community meal prepared by senior corps volunteers.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - LINC(Leading Into New Communities), FoodCorps, Feast Down East, VISTA, and Corporation for Public and Community Service have come together to host a Martin Luther King Day of Service Event for Monday, Jan. 21 . This event will take place at LINC farm located at 222 Division Drive near the airport from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

 According to the press release, the day will be spent clearing and preparing this future urban farm for spring planting. Community volunteers, students, and corps members will pitch in for this event.

Everyone is welcome to volunteer.  After volunteers finish their farm duties, a celebration meal will be prepared by senior corps volunteers from the Wilmington area.

NHC residents can take their Christmas trees to 3 locations for recycling

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – New Hanover County residents can begin recycling used Christmas trees during daylight hours on Wednesday, Dec. 26.

The New Hanover County Environmental Management Department is offering three locations for residents living outside the city limits to take their trees. Here are the locations:

  • Ogden Park, near baseball fields (225 Ogden Park Drive)
  • Myrtle Grove Middle School (901 Piner Road)
  • New Hanover County Landfill (5210 US Highway 421 North)

Save your Halloween candy wrappers for aquarium to recycle

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Halloween may be over, but the recycling process is an ongoing event, and officials at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher are encouraging local residents and students to help by collecting used candy wrappers to recycle.

According to a news release from an aquarium spokesperson, folks and students from classes around New Hanover and Brunswick counties are invited to participate with the wrapper recycling.

Anyone is welcome to contribute, but any participating class with the most candy wrappers by weight to the aquarium Dec. 1 will win a free outreach program with a live animal presentation.

Work on Wilmington looking for project ideas

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Leadership Wilmington will accept submissions from non-profit organizations until November 30 for service project proposals for Work on Wilmington day.

The event will be held April 20, 2013 and will deploy more than 20,000 community supporters to volunteer throughout the area.

The goal of Work on Wilmington is to bring people together to make the City of Wilmington a better place to live.

Sutton Lake boat access to be closed through Feb.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The boating access area at Sutton Lake is scheduled to be temporarily closed beginning Monday while it receives a facelift.

According to a press release, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission will construct two new boat ramps with new courtesy docks, a new handicap-accessible fishing pier, improved parking and traffic flow including handicap-accessible parking spaces, solar lighting and additional access area signage.

These improvements are expected to enhance the access to the freshwater fishing lake.

The work is expected to wrap up in February 2013.

Sutton Lake boat ramp to close until February

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The boating access area at Sutton Lake will be closed down temporarily starting next Monday for a facelift, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The changes include two new boat ramps with courtesy docks, a new handicap-accessible fishing pier, parking changes, solar lighting and more signage.

The spot will be closed until February next year.

Sutton Lake is 1,110 acres large. It provides cooling water for Duke Energy's L.V. Sutton Energy Complex. It's located off US Highway 421 at the end of Sutton Steam Plant Road.
