Sign up for driver's ed from now through June 28

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – If you want your child to take driver’s education classes, signups for the next session are from now until June 28, according to Laney High School’s website.

Classes are scheduled to begin July 8, and a parent meeting will take place July 10.

Wilmington, NC - Area financial planner Peter Starr will teach a class at Cape Fear Community College called "Financial Planning in an Uncertain World" in July.  The class will occur over two nights, meeting both Tuesday, July 16, and Tuesday, July 23, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.  

This class will focus on creating a financial plan for today and tomorrow, and is geared 

for people who want to create financial security for later in life. Students will learn how to invest in uncertain economic times and how to limit the eroding impact of inflation. They will also learn how to minimize income taxes and how to plan for economic and political instability. 

Essential legal documents, including common mistakes made with a will; social security benefits, including little known spousal options; and how to choose the age at which to apply for benefits will also be covered.

80 CFCC students work towards building new home in unique program

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – It's been a year in the making – 80 students from nine different technical and vocation programs have put in hours of hard work to build a brand new home for a local resident.

The house is part of a project in a collaborative effort with New Hanover County and Cape Fear Community College.

The county was awarded a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant and Scattered Site Housing Grant in 2010 from the NC Department of Commerce, Division of Community Assistance.

The purpose of the grant? To address the housing conditions of five low and very low income owner-occupied households within the county.

College officials at CFCC saw this project as an opportunity to expand the scope of their program to involve many more students than in the past.

CFCC students wrap up Queen Anne's Revenge recovery efforts

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Students in CFCC’s Marine Tech program will head to the water one final time as part of recovery efforts of nine cannons from the shipwreck of the Queen Anne’s Revenge.

According to CFCC, this mission will be incorporated into the students’ regular summer training voyage.

The cannons will be recovered over a period of three weeks, one per day, per week. The final cannon lift date is scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, with alternate dats of June 18 or 20.

Eaton fifth graders celebrate graduation

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Dozens of fifth graders at Eaton Elementary School said one final goodbye Wednesday, as they attended their graduation ceremony.

WECT's Frances Weller spoke to the students about being kind and making good choices. The students also watched a slide-show from their years in elementary school.

Teachers say the graduation was bittersweet.

Several parents showed their support for a woman who claims she was wrongly arrested for truancy.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Several parents showed their support for a woman who claims she was wrongly arrested for truancy.  Stacy Glidden was arrested last week for not sending her seventh grader to school, even through she claims she sent the school doctors' notes from three different doctors.  Monday she went before a judge.

Teacher of the year gets new set of wheels

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The teacher of the year in New Hanover County is starting off summer vacation with a new set of wheels.

Melissa Gillespie teaches social studies at Laney High School.  She teaches all grades and fills in where she's needed.

Hendrick Toyota Scion awarded Gillespie with the use of a 2013 Prius for one year after she was chosen as the teacher of the year for New Hanover County.  She can buy it from them at the end of the year.  Quaker State Oil also pitched in a $200 gift card.
