Laney High School Wellness Center announces summer hours

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Wilmington Health Access for Teens’ Laney Wellness Center will be open during the summer for rising ninth graders at Laney High School, according to a WHAT spokesperson.

The center will be open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 through Aug. 16.

WHAT accepts Medicaid, NC Health Choice and most commercial insurance. However, no student will be turned away because he or she can’t pay.

School to plant "rescue" tree for National Arbor Day celebration

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The Wilmington Tree Commission will host a special celebration this Friday in honor of National Arbor Day.

The festivities will be held at Blair Elementary School Friday, April 26 starting at 9 a.m.

A large “rescue” tree will be planted by Bill Akers with his large tree-spade truck in front of the school, and the students will also give short presentations about the importance of trees in the community.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The Brigade Boys & Girls Club is asking for your vote.

The group has been selected as one of the 200 finalists in the State Farm Neighborhood Assist program. 

The top 40 vote getters will get a $25,000 grant from the insurance company.

Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT/WSFX) – Bullying is getting a lot of attention these days in our schools, online and even in the workplace.

WECT and Fox Wilmington are teaming up with the Wilmington Police Department to take this issue head-on.

We’re co-hosting a public screening of the documentary Bully, free of charge at Thalian Hall April 18. The showing starts at 7:00 p.m.

While the event is free, you will need to get a ticket so we know how many people to expect.

You can pick up a ticket at the TV station, located at 322 Shipyard Boulevard, the Thalian Hall Box Office, or the Wilmington Police Department.
