Residents weigh in on the future of NC's economy

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Residents in New Hanover County were invited to help write the next chapter in the state’s economy and budget.

Wilmington held a “community conversation” Tuesday morning led by staff from the Budget & Tax Center and United Way.

During this session, community members had the opportunity to respond to critical questions and engage in issues that impact the future of the state.

Volunteers needed for tax return preparations

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, which is sponsored by the New Hanover County Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, is in search of volunteers 55 and older to help prepare income tax returns, according to a county spokesperson.

The goal of VITA, a free tax assistance program, is to help people with low to moderate income, elderly, disabled and limited-English speaking people who need help preparing their tax returns. 

Volunteers will undergo extensive IRS-approved training and certification, and will be taught basic to advanced tax strategies, tax law and more.

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington's Real Alternative radio station, THE EDGE 88.5 FM, is going off the air Nov. 12.

The move is coming after one of the larger donors to the station, was forced to pull its monthly contribution. The anonymous donor accounted for $8,000 a month.

According to Matt Wall, Development Manager, it was not only this large donation that kept the Edge broadcasting.

Voters eligible for free cup of coffee on Election Day

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – Coffee addicts who plan to take part in voting on Election Day this year are eligible for a free cup of coffee from area Bojangles’.

According to a news release from a restaurant spokesperson, voters who display “I Voted” stickers Tuesday will receive a free cup of the company’s BoJo coffee with any purchase.

Bojangles’ describes its BoJo coffee as “a freshly-brewed medium roast, premium blend coffee made from 100 percent Arabica beans.”

Participating Bojangles’ include the ones in Wilmington, Leland, Southport, Whiteville and Hampstead, according to an official who works with the company.

Bojangles' bringing back Pork Chop Biscuit for limited time

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Gotta-needa-wanna-getta-hava Bojangles’ fans will have a returning favorite menu item to look forward to soon.

Starting Monday, Nov. 5, Bojangles’ in the Wilmington area will be offering the Pork Chop Biscuit until mid-December, according to a news release.

“For those who have tried our delicious Pork Chop Biscuit, this is a highly anticipated time of year,” said Bojangles’ Senior Vice President of Research and Development Mike Bearss, in the news release.  “We encourage everyone who has not tasted this unique offer to take advantage of it while it’s around – you won’t find the Pork Chop Biscuit anywhere else at any other time.”

The Pork Chop Biscuit will be available throughout the day.

Time Warner Cable has new headquarters

Time Warner Cable has new headquarters

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Dozens turned out for a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Time Warner Cable headquarters.

Time Warner Cable’s new $6.4 million, 45,000 square foot facility is located at Scientific park in Wilmington.

The building is LEED certified with many features that promote energy conservation and sustainability.

Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Connie Majure-Rhett were among those in attendance. Tours of the building were given immediately after the ribbon cutting.
