New Hanover County receives distinguised budget award

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Budget Department has recently been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award.

According to a press release from the county, the award reflects the commitment of county commissioners and staff to meeting the highest principals of governmental budgeting.

To receive the award, the department had to reach the following specific guidelines designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves:

  • a policy document
  • a financial plan
  • an operations guide
  • a communications device

The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting. 

This is the 22nd year in the row the New Hanover County Budget Department has received this recognition.

ABC plans to purchase land to build new distribution center

The New Hanover County Alcoholic Beverage Control has given authorization for the purchase of land to build a new facility.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Alcoholic Beverage Control has given authorization for the purchase of land to build a new facility.

According to a press release sent by ABC CEO Dan Sykes, the board plans to buy 12.63 acres of land near the intersection of Market Street and Judges Road. The agreed purchase price is $1,200,000.

The want to use that land to build a new facility to house the main distribution center; to act as a second outlet for sales to mixed beverage permit holders; and to house administrative offices.

Sykes said the board wants to renovate its current building on S 17th Street after the new facility is complete. The renovations to the S 17th Street store would include an expanded retail ABC store and an outlet for sales to mixed beverage permit holders.

CFCC offers business seminar for faith-based organizations

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Cape Fear Community College Small Business Center will offer a special seminar for owners and managers of faith-based organizations on Feb. 21 from 6 - 9 p.m.

According to Doug Tarble, coordinator of CFCC's Small Business Center, faith-based organizations are considered businesses and subject to their own unique set of rules and regulations. This seminar addresses the operational and regulatory issues often overlooked or commonly not understood by faith-based organization leaders and managers.

The program runs from 6 - 9 p.m. in room L-107 in the CFCC Health Sciences Building at the corner of Walnut and Second St.

11 area schools awarded grants

SOUTHEASTERN NC (WECT) – Eleven schools in the Cape Fear region have been awarded $5,500 in grant funding, thanks to Scotchman Convenience Stores and the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance program.

According to a news release on behalf of VPS Convenience Store Group, Scotchman and school officials worked together to get the grants, which will go toward math and science education.

Sweeten your Valentine's Day with some heart-shaped Bo's

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Bojangles’ is making Valentine’s Day a little sweeter by offering its limited time heart-shaped Bo-Berry Biscuits®.

According to a press release from the franchise, the biscuits will be available in participating locations from Friday, Feb. 8 through Valentine’s Day.

“Bojangles’ is always looking for fun ways to celebrate the holidays,” said Bojangles’ Senior Vice President of Marketing Randy Poindexter.  “This mouth-watering treat has been a customer favorite since it was introduced more than 20 years ago, so we felt offering the heart-shaped biscuits would be a fun and fitting way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.”

The heart-shaped biscuits will be available as a pair in addition to the half-dozen and dozen.

Bojangles’ is also offering their Facebook fans prizes in the coming days.

Topsail resident buys old Coty Plant

Rocky Point Ventures, LLC owned by Topsail resident David Barns purchased the plant.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Coty Plant went on the auction block in November and officially has a new owner.

Rocky Point Ventures, LLC owned by Topsail resident David Barnes purchased the plant.

Barnes said he will divide up the property into three or four different sections and then lease each part. His hope is to boost the economy by providing more jobs.

According to Barnes, each section will be leased to companies that offer employment opportunities.

The Coty Plant shut down in 2011, forcing hundreds of people to lose their jobs.

Zumbathon planned to raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - There's a Zumbathon planned to help raise money for local military families.

Stacey Moulder is a Zumba instructor at Gold's Gym off Racine, and now she wants to help raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project.  Moulder said her husband has been in the military for at least ten years, so she understands what families go through and how important The Wounded Warrior Project is for them.

Moulder hopes she can raise $1,000.
