Perry's Emporium owner pays for new WPD tool

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Thanks to the help of a local businessman, the Wilmington Police Department will have a new tool to help fight crime.

Allen Perry, owner of Perry’s Emporium, has agreed to pay for an annual subscription to an online website that will provide the WPD with information regarding stolen property around the country.

After one year, the WPD will review the value of the program, and decide if it wants to seek funding for the future. One source of funds could be from existing fees charged for precious metal dealers.

CFPUA hires new Chief Operations Officer

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority has a new Chief Operations Officer/Deputy Chief Executive Office.

Carey Ricks, a spokesperson for the CFPUA, announced that Jim Flechtner accepted the position that was vacated by Nancy Gallinaro in July.

Flechtner currently holds the position of Engineering Manager with the Authority and will reportedly begin at his new position on Oct. 31.

Ricks said that Flechtner graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering Technology and received a Masters of Business Administration from UNC-Wilmington. He's a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and holds an N.C. State Professional Engineer License.

He began working for the City of Wilmington in 1994 and transferred to the CFPUA in 2008, according to Ricks.

Wilmington settles on lawsuit

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The City of Wilmington will pay $16,500 to settle a lawsuit with FMO Real Estate.

In June of 2010, a dispute arose between the City and FMO as to whether or not a billboard was in compliance with zoning laws of the City. The case went to court and was decided in favor of FMO, which was awarded $24,500 in attorney fees.

Hunting for treasure in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some treasure hunters are headed to Wilmington and they want to know what gems you might have stashed away.

The Treasure Hunters Roadshow will be in town October 10-15 at the Holiday Inn Express on Van Campen Boulevard.

More than 1,200 people are expected to bring in their rare and unusual collectibles. They'll have a chance to talk to antique and collectible experts for free.

The Roadshow travels the world and has discovered all kinds of treasures. Recent finds include a 1960s vintage guitar purchased for $100,000, four gold coins purchased for $72,000, Confederate money hidden in the walls of a home, and a thank you letter written by Abraham Lincoln.

While in Wilmington, the Treasure Hunters Roadshow hopes to see items such as coins and paper currency issued prior to 1965, toys, dolls, trains, vintage jewelry, musical instruments, war memorabilia, gold and silver jewelry, costume jewelry, advertising memorabilia, swords, knives, daggers and the unusual.

Unemployment down slightly in New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - The state released county by county unemployment statistics Friday.

New Hanover County's unemployment rate changed slightly, improving from 10.1% in July to 10% in August.

Statewide, the unemployment rate is at 10.4%.

Blizzard Athletics to host fall basketball league

Blizzard Athletics to host fall basketball league

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Blizzard Athletics, a player development company that was founded in New Hanover County by UNCW basketball legend Brett Blizzard, is looking for local players to create a fall basketball league.

The first game of the season is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 27, according to Skyler Vigus, who is in charge of the league operations while Blizzard plays professionally in Italy. Games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the 301 North Green Meadows Drive, Building F facility.

Each team will be guaranteed a total of seven regular season games and at least one playoff game. Players can sign up as a team or as individuals that will be added to an existing team. The entry fee is set at $500 per team.

New Hanover Co. residents eligible for appliance rebate program

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) — Residents in New Hanover County are eligible for an appliance rebate through the North Carolina Energy Office’s Appliance Replacement Program.

Up to $1.4 million is available in rebates to residents who purchase qualified Energy Star refrigerators, freezers or washing machines.

The program, designed to assist Hurricane Irene victims replace old or damaged appliances, will provide rebates of $200 for an E-Star freezer or dishwasher, $300 towards a new washer, $500 on any E-Star refrigerator and more.
