Duke Energy donates $15,000 to Cape Fear Community College for student scholarships

Wilmington, NC- Duke Energy recently donated $15,000 to Cape Fear Community College for students enrolled in technical and vocational programs.  Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need to students enrolled in Electronics Engineering Technology, Electrical/Electronics Technology, Industrial Systems Technology and Computer Engineering Technology.

John K. Elliott, Director of East Region Government and Community Relations for Duke Energy, presented the check to Dr. Ted D. Spring, President of Cape Fear Community College, and then spoke to a group of students at CFCC’s North Campus about their futures and opportunities at Duke Energy. “This grant represents an investment in this region and in the energy future of our state,” Elliott said. "These students are doing all the heavy lifting and putting all the long hours in, juggling family and school.  We're glad to help."

CFCC's new barber school open for business

WILMINGTON - Earlier this year, Cape Fear Community College opened a new barber training school to provide students with the skills to become a professional barber.

The school is now open for businesses and is looking for clients.

Services include haircuts, beard trimming, hot shaves and more. Services range from $2 for a mustache trim to $16 for highlights. All transations are cash only.

Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Wilmington opens May 11, offering full-service grooming, and a wide selection of pet foods and supplies.

Erskine Smith is the franchise owner of the Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming Wilmington store. He is also the proud parent of Rigby, a Jack Russell Terrier, and two rescued cats.

Building houses of out straw? CFCC students present findings about latest trends in sustainable tech

WILMINGTON - Building a house out of straw might sound like something out of a nursery rhyme, but straw bale house building is a construction technique that is gaining more attention from sustainable home builders because of some distinct advantages over conventional methods.

Straw bale house construction is just one of the sustainability-related topics that will be presented by students at Cape Fear Community College's Sustainability Technologies program later this week. 

Thirteen graduating students from the program will be showcase a number of special projects dealing with energy efficiency, sustainability, and green building technology on Saturday, May 4 at 9:30 a.m. in the BB&T Auditorium in the McKeithan Center at CFCC's North Campus.

This year's event features a diverse group of projects including a the results of an investigation of the plastics recycling industry, straw bale home construction and an industrial energy audit.

Precautionary boil water advisory rescinded

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A precautionary boil water advisory was rescinded Thursday morning for several streets in the Carolina Heights and Love Grove areas of Wilmington.

The advisory was issued Wednesday, April 24 at 9:00 a.m.

The advirsory was a precautionary measure during planned CFPUA water main replacement work.

The work affected approximately 160 customers living at the following addresses:

  • 800 and 900 blocks of Fanning St;
  • 800 block of Anderson Street;
  • 800, 900, 1000 blocks of N 10th St;
  • 900 and 1000 block of N 11th St;
  • 1500 block of Railroad St; and
  • All of Corbett Street; Liverpool Street; King Street; Stanley Street; Center Street; Clarendon Street; Creek Front Street; Wynnwood Street and Hall Street.

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Hundreds of students met with area employers Wednesday during a job fair at Cape Fear Community College.

With graduation just a few weeks a way, many students are focusing their sights on careers.

Dozens of employers were at the event looking to hire CFCC students for jobs in a variety of fields.
