Junior League prepares for Mint Julep Jubilee

WILMINGTON, NC - (WECT) - On Saturday, the Junior League of Wilmington will be hosting its 5th annual Mint Julep Jubilee at the Poplar Grove Plantation.

The annual fundraiser is a Kentucky Derby-themed celebration that raises money for the programs that the Junior League supports.

The event will include race coverage, raffle prizes, live music by the Steady Eddies, food from Poor Piggies, a 'best hat' contest, and a mint julep station.

Students prepare for annual Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – The 19th Annual New Hanover County Schools High School Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition will be held this Saturday at Mayfaire Town Center.

Each high school art team will be assigned a corner of Main and Innovation Drives to create their chalk designs.

Students from Ashley, Hoggard, Laney and New Hanover High Schools will have two hours to finish their artwork.

Several middle school art students will also be on hand to watch and create smaller versions of chalk designs.

The winning high school art team will receive the NHCS High School Sidewalk Chalk Art plaque to be displayed at their school for one year.

Cape Fear Community College to add new classes in heritage arts this spring

WILMINGTON -  Cape Fear Community College is looking for aspiring artists or hobbyists who are interested in honing their artistic skills. Due to popular demand, CFCC will add three new courses in the arts this spring. The college is seeking students for courses in painting, stained glass mosaics, and acoustic guitar. The exact dates, times and costs for these classes will be set once enough student interest is received. Students are encouraged to pre-register as soon as possible.

Paint It!  Decorative Techniques Masteries: Students will learn a variety of painting techniques through demonstration and creative experimentation.  These skills will be used for painting and refurbishing furniture, walls and decorative objects.  Some techniques to be mastered include color mixing, paint application, pattern creations, stenciling, and hand decorating. Taught by Kerri Ferrari-Marchese.

WILMINGTON - North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory will join local community leaders and officials from Cape Fear Community College as they break ground on a major new building in downtown Wilmington later this week.

A ground-breaking ceremony for CFCC's much-anticipated Humanities and Fine Arts Center will be held on Thursday, March 21 at 2:00 p.m. at the corner of Second and Hanover St. at the college's downtown Wilmington Campus.

Designed at 160,000 square-feet, the center will serve a dual role as a teching facility and a modern performing arts center for the college and the community.

Dr. Ted D. Spring, President of Cape Fear Community College said he is excited about the new opportunities that the new facility will offer for the college and the community.

Students show off musical skills in elite jazz band

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Five students in New Hanover County will show off their musical skills in the Eastern District Jazz Band.

The North Carolina Bandmasters Association chose the middle and high school students, who spent months preparing scales, an instrumental solo and practicing improvisational skills in preparation for the audition.

The Eastern District is comprised of 30 counties with 53 high schools participating in All-District.

NHC students make up about 21% of Eastern District Honor Band

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – More than three dozen band students from the four traditional high schools in New Hanover County have been selected to participate in the state Easter District Honor Band.

The student musicians were chosen to participate through and audition process that required students to learn seven or eight scales, multiple octaves, the chromatic scale for their instruments and full solos.

The selected students will go to ECU at the beginning of February to perform with other members of the All-District Band.

The final concert will be Saturday, February 2 at 5:30 p.m. and is free to the public.

According to New Hanover County Schools, a total of 190 students were selected for the Eastern District Honor Band, representing 30 counties and up to 64 high schools. NHCS’ student participation makes up approximately 21% of the Honor Band.

CFCC hosts free concert

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The Cape Fear Community College Humanities and Fine Arts Department are hosting a free concert at the college’s north campus.

“Voice Spectacular” will take the stage in the BB&T Auditorium Thursday night at 7:00.

The free concert will feature various music styles, including classical, Broadway, soul and R&B.
